Vodafone’s lockdown campaign directed over WhatsApp and FaceTime by Tom Wilson

The limitations caused by worldwide stay-at-home order has pushed many brands to use non-traditional ways to stay in touch with their consumers. One of the most common approaches is to produce user-generated content that requires talent to shoot their videos themselves by using their devices and getting directions from directors through WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, etc.

Vodafone has teamed up with Hunters House director Tom Wilson to take a step on this approach and to produce their “Together We’re Powerful Campaign” that was done 100% remotely. Tom has worked on helping people to rearrange their furniture for the shots, to pick their on-camera clothes, adjust hair, makeup, camera positioning, room lighting, and more.

“Directing over WhatsApp or FaceTime sounded pretty undemanding. But it wasn’t. We were working non-stop, directing people, giving feedback, and doing lots of group director chats to iron out problems. Directing remotely is a strange experience, it’s incredibly frustrating to not be able to actually be there and I think we all realized that being as patient and understanding as possible was critical,” Tom Wilson explained.

Tom has joined the Hunters House Directors Agency for exclusive commercial representation in Asia, the Middle East, and most of Eastern Europe back in 2019. Jen Alvares, a Partner and Executive Producer at Hunters House Entertainment Group commented, “Tom is one of the most collaborative directors I know. Jobs like this require many more directions because you’re working with regular people, who don’t have any professional experience in creating professional grade videos and there is nobody around to help them but a director. If anybody could pull this off graciously, it’s Tom.”
